Our Smart Manufacturing Park has been awarded the Best Free Zone in America for the fourth consecutive year

Coyol Free Zone has made significant strides in sustainable construction, energy consumption, and renewable energy initiatives, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.

Here, we detail our progress and the key policies, initiatives, and innovations that underscore our leadership in sustainability.

In 2023, the construction area in Coyol Free Zone grew while maintaining sustainable practices. The construction of new buildings and expansions covered an area of 146,532.37 ft².

This growth included innovative soil studies aimed at optimizing existing materials on-site, resulting in a 30% reduction in earth movement requirements. This approach not only has reduced the environmental impact, but also has cut construction costs significantly.

Furthermore, 1,076,400 ft² of the constructed area of the Park is built under LEED standards. These international standards are adopted to enhance design practices, construction processes, and waste management.

The companies based in Coyol Free Zone are not only constantly improving their manufacturing processes, but also adopting green policies concerning their manufacturing facilities.

They adhere to criteria of energy efficiency, water management, use of alternative energies, indoor environmental quality, material selection, and waste management during and after a construction.

Coyol Free Zone’s renewable energy initiatives

In our pursuit of sustainability, we have implemented several key initiatives focusing on renewable energy and resource optimization:

  1. Water Management: Coyol Free Zone has transitioned from sprinkler irrigation systems to drip irrigation, significantly reducing water usage. By the summer of 2023-2024, the Park has achieved 100% irrigation using recycled water from its treatment plant and local canals. This initiative not only preserves potable water but also ensures an efficient use of recycled resources.
  2. Green Areas and Biodiversity: Approximately 19% of the land in the Park, equating to about 2,195,629 ft², is allocated to conservation and green areas. These areas include protected zones along water bodies and dedicated recreational spaces. We also contribute to the preservation of El Coyol Biological Corridor, planting over 100 trees annually to support local biodiversity and create a sustainable environment for wildlife.

What are Coyol Free Zone policies concerning environmental protection?

Coyol Free Zone has established several policies and initiatives to bolster sustainability efforts. One of them is our own Environmental Commitment Declaration, which underscores our dedication to adhering to Costa Rican environmental laws while promoting projects that go beyond legal requirements to achieve broader environmental benefits.

This policy is centered on the lifecycle of products and processes to minimize environmental impact.

Our dedication to sustainable development and energy efficiency is evident through comprehensive initiatives and continuous improvement in environmental practices.

By integrating renewable energy, optimizing resource use, and fostering biodiversity, we are setting a benchmark for sustainable industrial practices in the region.

These efforts not only enhance the Park’s operational efficiency but also contribute significantly to the environmental wellbeing of the surrounding communities and the country.

Furthermore, the Park has been awarded the Best Free Zone in America for the fourth consecutive year, and in previous years it has been honored for its innovative and sustainable business practices.
