June 2026. Sustainability is interconnected to business performance and sustained growth. Across sectors such as Life Sciences, Smart Manufacturing, and Semiconductors, companies require operating environments capable of fostering resilience, efficiency, and continuity over time.

Facilities play a central role in supporting these conditions. Today, industrial parks are expected to provide infrastructure and buildings capable of responding to evolving requirements, changing supply chain dynamics, and stricter sustainability criteria. As Costa Rica’s leading Life Sciences hub, Coyol Free Zone has evolved alongside these global dynamics. Today, the Park is home to 34 world-class companies, generating more than 25,400 high-quality jobs across industries where precision and reliability are essential.

Planning Growth with Vision of Future

Manufacturing growth depends on how industrial parks integrate sustainability into daily operations. Resource optimization, environmental management, and business continuity have become closely connected to competitiveness across global industries.

At Coyol Free Zone, approximately 205,999 m² — equivalent to 19% of the total area of the Park — has been designated to green zones, conservation areas, and recreational outdoor spaces.

Native tree conservation zones and integrated green areas are part of a planning approach designed to balance business expansion with responsible land stewardship.

This vision is also reflected in the buildings and functional structures. A total of 100,000m2 of LEED-certified buildings strengthen companies operating in sectors where internationally recognized sustainability criteria influence corporate standards and decision-making processes.

Resource management also plays an important role in daily operations. At Coyol Free Zone, our wastewater treatment plant processes approximately 1,300 m³ every day, thus supporting responsible water management practices across manufacturing environments. In parallel, solar panels installed on the buildings generated more than 92,000 kWh, contributing to improved efficiency across multiple processes.

Sustainability Beyond Facilities

As sustainability standards continue to evolve globally, competitiveness depends on factors such as mobility, accessibility, and workforce experience; which have become essential components of industrial environments where operational efficiency directly influence long-term performance.

Through Ride Coyol — Coyol Free Zone’s smart mobility platform — more than 20,000 users, representing 80% of the workforce within the Park, commute daily to the companies operating on-site, using our centralized transportation system designed to support production continuity, and more sustainable commuting patterns. With 440 routes connecting over 160 destinations, it enhances efficiency, contributing through route optimization, and helping to reduce dependence on private transportation through the integration of digital tools and centralized transportation management.

The role of industrial parks continues to expand alongside the evolving requirements of the sectors they serve. Enhancing the daily commuting experience of employees has become an important consideration in creating environments prepared for sustained growth and changing workforce expectations.

Sustainability as a Measure of Leadership

As sustainability shapes manufacturing environments, international recognition underscores the efforts of leading Free Zones to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and social responsibility. These achievements reflect a long-term commitment to responsible and sustainable development.

In this context, the international award received by Coyol Free Zone reflects the growing relevance of sustainable practices and planning within manufacturing industries. The Park was included by the Global Alliance of Special Economic Zones (GASEZ) in the list of the world´s “50 SDG Model Zones,” recognizing initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as actions related to environmental, social, and governance standards. In addition, fDi Intelligence has distinguished Coyol Free Zone for its competitiveness, sustainability, and leadership as a leading Free Zone for highly specialized industries.

Today, sustainability has become part of the foundation shaping the future of global industrial development.
