• Expansion will triple storage and delivery capacity for raw materials, supplies and laboratory equipment.

Alajuela, June 12, 2025. Thermo Fisher Scientific, a company engaged in the import, distribution and marketing of raw materials, consumables and supplies for the manufacture of Medical Devices, Semiconductors and related industries, expands its operations in Coyol Free Zone, in order to respond to the growing demand of the medical industry.

The new distribution center will efficiently meet the supply needs of products and services for over 70 companies in the Life Sciences Cluster in Costa Rica. This significant investment will triple the installed capacity for storage and distribution of raw materials, supplies, laboratory equipment, furniture, and products that meet customer requirements.

“Thermo Fisher Scientific’s decision to expand its operations in Costa Rica reinforces the country’s strategic position as a trusted partner for high value-added industries. This expansion enhances the logistics capabilities of our Life Sciences cluster and plays a key role in improving supply chain efficiency across the sector. At the Ministry of Foreign Trade, we welcome this important milestone, which underscores the strength of our Free Trade Zone Regime, the competitiveness of our talent, and Costa Rica’s firm commitment to sustainability, quality, and innovation”, added Manuel Tovar, Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Trade.

This state-of-the-art facility is designed to support the sustained growth of the industry over the next decade. It is a modern, world-class building with features and equipment that allow for high productivity and maximize the utilization of physical space. It represents an expansion of 2,325 m² in addition to the 1,400 m² already existing at Coyol Free Zone.

Carlos Wong, Managing Director of CODE Development Group, co-developer of Coyol Free Zone, was pleased that Thermo Fisher is expanding its operations in the same park where it has been successfully operating since 2018 with its first building. “We congratulate Thermo Fisher for this new distribution center that comes to supply the needs of products and services for the more than 70 companies of the Life Sciences cluster in Costa Rica. Allowing these companies to transform their storage spaces into clean rooms and manufacturing environments, promoting growth, attracting the Foreign Direct Investment that such growth implies, and creating new quality jobs”.

The expansion of Thermo Fisher reaffirms the positioning of Costa Rica as a strategic hub for the Life Sciences industry. The country offers highly qualified human talent and an enabling environment that allows companies in the sector to grow and strengthen their operations.

“Our corporate leaders have been able to identify a highly skilled, professional and competitive labor pool in Costa Rica. In addition, a socio-economic environment that allows for investment stability and a culture of continuous improvement that demonstrates our commitment to take on new challenges”, said Francisco Chávez, Vice President and General Manager of Thermo Fisher Scientific in Latin America.

With these installations, the company added new jobs in various areas of the organization, including operational, administrative, engineering and technical service functions, which are added to the group of employees that are already part of the Coyol Free Zone operation.

The new distribution center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is expected to be ISO 9001-2015 certified in the near future. It has been awarded the Ecological Blue Flag distinction and implements initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint. In order to strengthen the management system, in a next stage it intends to incorporate the ISO 24385 certification, focused on the medical industry.

Currently, Thermo Fisher serves all manufacturing companies operating under the Free Trade Zone regime in Costa Rica and is working on projects that will allow it to become a supply center for the region in Latin America.

According to Laura López, CEO of the Trade & Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), “Costa Rica continues to lead in attracting and retaining companies in the Medical Device sector, reaffirming the strength of its national value proposition and its increasingly competitive conditions for investment. One key factor is the presence of a solid base of local suppliers and distribution centers, such as that of Thermo Fisher Scientific, which facilitate the operations and growth of other companies in the sector, thereby expanding both production capacity and exports”, concluded.
